Executive coaching and mentoring in innovation management

Designed for executives and R&D&I managers seeking to strengthen their innovation leadership and management skills. A one-to-one, results-oriented programme inspired by the 5-40® Methodology.

Coaching and executive mentoring: two forms of one-to-one support

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, coaching and mentoring are complementary approaches. In the context of industrial innovation management, each plays a distinct and highly valuable role in supporting the executive or manager.

Innovation coaching

A structured support process aimed at helping the professional develop their own capabilities to manage innovation, lead R&D&I teams, and address the specific challenges of their role. The coach does not provide the answers: they facilitate the reflection process, clarify objectives, identify obstacles, and support the definition and execution of a concrete action plan.

Executive mentoring

Support based on the transfer of accumulated knowledge and experience. The mentor offers expert guidance on industrial innovation management: what works—and what does not—in real industrial environments; how to approach critical decisions in R&D&I projects; how to structure effective innovation teams; or how to build a career in Innovation Management. Mentoring is particularly suited to executives taking on new R&D&I leadership positions or facing highly complex organisational challenges in time-sensitive situations.

How the coaching and mentoring process is structured

The process is adapted to the needs and circumstances of each professional, but follows a structure that ensures steady progress towards the objectives set at the outset.

Initial diagnosis and goal-setting

A first session to analyse the professional's current situation: their role, responsibilities, the challenges they face, and the results they expect from the process. This diagnosis is used to define the specific objectives of the coaching and/or mentoring process, the timeframe for achieving them, and a working plan inspired by the 5-40® Methodology.

One-to-one working sessions

Regular individual sessions, with the format (online or in person), frequency, and duration adapted to the professional's needs. Sessions focus on implementing concrete actions from the plan, reviewing results, and adjusting based on progress.

Evaluation and close-out

A final session to evaluate the achievement of the objectives and the skills developed.

Judgement that only someone who has held that position can offer

The effectiveness of executive mentoring depends directly on the relevance of the mentor's experience. Arturo Casado has directed R&D&I projects at large international industrial groups for decades, has managed innovation teams in technically and organisationally complex environments, and has worked with numerous client, supplier and partner companies. He understands, from the inside, the real challenges faced by an industrial innovation executive — not from theory, but from accumulated practice.

That experience is what turns the mentoring process into support backed by real judgement, not a generic supportive conversation.

Frequently asked questions about innovation coaching and mentoring

What is innovation coaching and what is it for?

Innovation coaching is a one-to-one support process aimed at helping the professional develop the capabilities needed to manage innovation effectively: leading R&D&I teams, making strategic decisions, managing organisational change, and building an innovation culture. Unlike training or consulting, coaching does not transfer knowledge or implement solutions — it supports the professional in developing their own capabilities and defining their own action plan.

Coaching is a facilitated process in which the coach helps the professional develop their own answers and capabilities through questions, structured reflection and follow-up on commitments. Executive mentoring, by contrast, involves the active transfer of knowledge and experience by the mentor: the mentor contributes their expert judgement, shares their direct experience of similar situations, and guides the mentee’s decision-making. In industrial innovation management, both approaches are complementary and can be combined depending on the professional’s needs.

The process begins with a diagnostic session analysing the professional’s current situation, their specific challenges, and the results they expect to achieve. From there, the objectives of the process are defined and a working plan is established with regular individual sessions. Each session builds on progress made since the previous one and focuses on defining and following up on concrete actions. The duration and frequency of the process are adapted to each professional’s needs.

The duration of coaching or mentoring processes is agreed based on the objectives, timeframe and specific circumstances of the professional. As a general guide, processes typically last between 2 and 6 months.

Executive mentoring offers something no training programme can: access to the judgement of someone who has held equivalent positions in real industrial environments and faced the same challenges. While training transmits structured knowledge and consulting implements systems, mentoring puts the mentor’s accumulated experience at the professional’s disposal so they can make better decisions in their own context.

Yes. Organisations can engage the executive coaching and mentoring service as part of their talent development programmes in innovation management. It is particularly suited to supporting executives taking on new R&D&I responsibilities, backing organisational transformation processes in the innovation function, or developing the leadership capabilities of R&D&I team managers.

The most important criterion is the coach’s or mentor’s experience in managing innovation in industrial environments. Effective support in this field requires someone who has managed R&D&I projects, led innovation teams, and understands from the inside the technical, organisational and strategic constraints of the industrial environment. Only this experience makes it possible to empathise and build a relationship of trust with the professional. Academic or generalist consulting approaches are complementary, but cannot replace direct executive experience in innovation.
