An operational manual for managing innovation in industry

The book Industrial Innovation Process 5-40® sets out the foundations and operational details of the 5-40® Methodology: the innovation management system developed by Arturo Casado through 25 years of experience leading R&D&I projects in highly complex industrial environments.

Although it draws on models and management methods described in academic literature, this is not an essay on innovation theory. It is a practical manual that explains, step by step, how to develop and launch new products, services, and manufacturing processes in industrial companies.

What you will find in the book

The book opens with a concise introduction to the conceptual foundations of the 5-40® Industrial Innovation Process. Its starting point is a critical look at the difficulties industrial companies face when trying to establish internal innovation processes. This analysis reveals deeper and not always recognised challenges in managing innovation in industry, together with a set of principles for addressing them. These principles form the foundations of the 5-40® Process.

The second chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the 5-40® Industrial Innovation Process. It presents the 5 phases and 40 tasks from which the methodology takes its name, explains how the process works, and introduces the governance model, built around the roles of the Innovation Manager and Innovation Committee. It also describes the essential tools required to manage the innovation project portfolio.

The following chapters, which form the core of the book, describe the 5 phases and 40 tasks in detail: what needs to be done, when and how to do it, which resources are required, and which decisions must be made. Examples from the manufacturing industry illustrate how the process works in practice. They also explain how to effectively integrate Open Innovation into the company’s innovation process.

The book includes a final chapter providing practical guidance on implementing the 5-40® Industrial Innovation Process within an organisation.
